How to Troubleshoot a Flame Sensor in a Nordyne Furnace

Nordyne manufactures various heating and cooling products, including furnace systems. One important internal component in these furnaces is the flame sensor. This is a safeguard that monitors the pilot flame in the furnace. If the sensor isn't working properly, the furnace will automatically shut off.   Turn off your furnace and remove the screws on the top access panel of your Nordyne furnace. Remove the panel. The flame sensor will be located next to the pilot light. It is metal rod a few inches in length. At the base of the sensor a wiring harness is attached.

  Check the pilot light. If the pilot light isn't on then the problem isn't with the sensor. You will need to have a professional relight the pilot for you. If the pilot light is on, proceed to the next step.

  Check the wiring harness at the base of the sensor and ensure it is plugged in securely. If it isn't plugged in securely, unplug it and plug it back in. If the problem isn't with the wiring, proceed to the next step.

  Check the rod of the sensor. This part can frequently become dirty and caked with dirt and grime.

  Clean the rod thoroughly with a steel wool pad. This should get your sensor working again. If the sensor still doesn't work, it is likely damaged beyond repair and will need to be replaced by a professional.
