Replacing the Door Latch Mechanism on a GE Oven

General Electric manufactures a line of residential ranges with a self-cleaning oven feature. During a self-cleaning cycle, a thermally-controlled locking mechanism inside the cooktop engages to prevent the oven door from being opened. When the door latch mechanism is functioning correctly, the latch locks at 560 F and unlocks when the oven cools down to 300 F. If the door latch mechanism on your GE oven fails to lock or unlock at the appropriate temperatures, it's time for a replacement.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the range from the wall outlet to avoid electrical shock while replacing the oven door latch mechanism. Close the gas supply valve if you have a GE gas range.

    • 2

Remove the cooktop burners. Pinch electric burners at their bases and remove them from their receptacles. Lift off the burner caps and remove the screws securing gas burners to the cooktop. Place the removed burners on a padded surface until you're ready to reinstall them.

    • 3

Insert a flat-head screwdriver into the space underneath the cooktop. Locate the metal retaining clips securing the cooktop to the range. Press the clips with the tip of the screwdriver to release them. Raise the cooktop and prop it up with the support rods located on each side of the range cabinet. Remove the cooktop, if necessary, to access the door latch mechanism in your model. Shift the cooktop to the right or left to disengage the hinge pins and lift it off the range.

Remove the screws that secure the door latch assembly cover. The number and type of screws varies by model. Lift off the cover to reveal the door latch mechanism. Take out the screws on the door latch mechanism mounting plate. Unplug the wiring connector and remove the mechanism from the range.

Line up the screw holes on the mounting plate of the replacement door latch mechanism with the holes on the range. Reinsert and tighten the removed screws.
