How to Change a Drain Valve Seal on a GE Dishwasher

If water leaks from your GE dishwasher, it might be due to a malfunctioning drain valve. The drain valve itself could be faulty due to a malfunctioning solenoid or gate arm. It's also common for water to leak because of a problem with the seal on the drain valve. To get to and replace the seal, you have to disassemble the drain valve.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power from your GE dishwasher. You can either unplug the dishwasher or turn the power off to the dishwasher at your circuit breaker.

    • 2

Unscrew and remove the panel from below the dishwasher door.

    • 3

Find the drain hose. Follow the hose from the dishwasher motor to locate the drain valve.

    • 4

Check that the gate arm of the drain valve works properly. Move the gate arm up and down. If it doesn't work properly, it needs to be replaced. Check the springs and replace them if they're worn.

    • 5

Label the wires from the solenoid to the drain valve. Use needle-nose pliers to disconnect the connectors from the solenoid. Grab the connectors with the pliers -- never grab the wires themselves -- and gently pull to disconnect them.

    • 6

Unscrew the solenoid. Push down on the gate arm to release the solenoid.

    • 7

Remove the nut holding the valve seal. Remove the seal. Moisten the new seal before sliding it into place.

    • 8

Follow the reverse of steps 1 through 6 to reassemble the drain valve and dishwasher.
