How to Replace the Thrust Bearing on a Maytag

Maytag, a division of Whirlpool Corp., offers an extensive line of washing machines for residential customers. The thrust bearing, sometimes referred to as a thrust washer, is an internal washing machine component that holds the clutch assembly in alignment on the motor shaft. When the time comes to replace the thrust washer in your Maytag washing machine, roll up your sleeves and get ready for a challenge. Replacing the component requires the removal of the motor assembly.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the washing machine to avoid electrical injury while replacing the thrust bearing. Turn off the hot and cold water supply valves during the repair.

    • 2

Pull the washing machine away from the wall. Disconnect the hoses at the back of the appliance; unscrew the clamps on the water supply hoses and pinch the squeeze clamp to detach the drain hose. Hold a towel under the hoses when you disconnect them to catch any water in the lines.

    • 3

Open the washing machine lid. Remove the cap on the top of the agitator assembly; pry up the cap with a small flat-head screwdriver if necessary. Hold the agitator in place and use a 7/16-inch socket wrench to remove the agitator bolt and washer. Lift the agitator assembly out of the washing machine tub.

    • 4

Lay the washing machine on its back on top of an old towel. The appliance is heavy; lower it slowly and have someone help you if necessary.

    • 5

Access the pump and motor assembly components from the underside of the washing machine. Detach the metal clips that hold the pump to the motor shaft. Push the pump to the left side of the appliance cabinet, but leave the two pump hoses attached.

    • 6

Locate the motor assembly wiring harness and unplug the plastic connectors. Unclip the wires from the retaining clip on the base of the motor.

    • 7

Remove the bolts on the gear case using a 1/2-inch socket wrench. Carefully slide the motor assembly out of the appliance cabinet and set it on a padded surface.

    • 8

Pull the disc-like thrust bearing component off of the motor shaft. Thread a replacement thrust bearing onto the motor shaft and push it into place.
