How to Replace the Clip on a Washing Machine's Clutch

When the clutch on your direct-drive washing machine becomes worn, the washer will fail to agitate or spin your clothes during the wash cycle. Replacing the clutch on your washing machine can get your machine working again. Installing a new clutch requires taking the motor and gear housing out of the washer. Once you access the clutch, you can quickly make the repair, but the repair requires you to secure the clutch housing with two separate clips. Failure to engage the clips in and around the housing and agitator shaft can result in additional damage to your washer.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the new clutch housing over the agitator shaft. Position the housing to sit flush against the gear case.

    • 2

Place the retaining ring clip around the agitator shaft. There is a 90-degree bend in the wire on one end of the clip. Insert the 90-degree bend into the small hole located in the clutch housing next to the shaft opening.

    • 3

Hold the retaining ring clip against the four raised flanges on the clutch housing with your fingers. Use a flat-head screwdriver to force the ring clip beneath the flanges of the housing. It may take more than one attempt to push the ring beneath the flanges.

Slide the flat C-clip into the slots located on both sides of the agitator shaft. The C-clip sits directly on top of the ring clip.

    • 5

Position the tongue and groove pliers around the agitator shaft and the C-clip. Place the top jaw of the pliers on the top of the C-clip and the bottom jaw on the agitator shaft. Squeeze the handles of the pliers to force the C-clip around the shaft, snapping it into its proper position.
