Removing the Switch on a Maytag Ice Maker

Many Maytag side-by-side refrigerator models feature an automatic ice maker that supplies ice through a dispenser in the freezer door. The actuator switch tells the ice maker when to dispense the ice. If the ice maker fails to dispense ice or dispenses it too frequently, it may be an indication of a problem with the actuator switch. You can remove the actuator switch from the ice maker to troubleshoot, repair or replace it. The process is simple, though it requires a bit of disassembly.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the refrigerator from the wall outlet to avoid serious injury or death.

    • 2

Pull out the drip tray located underneath the water and ice dispenser on the freezer door. Remove the two Phillips screws that hold the ice and water dispenser control panel to the door. Set aside the removed control panel.

    • 3

Locate the slide selector on the fountain bracket directly above the water and ice dispenser. Move the slide selector to the center of the bracket.

    • 4

Remove the three Phillips screws securing the fountain bracket assembly. Pull the assembly away from the door to reveal the ice door, ice door solenoid and actuator switch.

    • 5

Find the actuator switch below the ice door. Look for a small rectangular component that's mounted to the ice maker assembly with a single Phillips screw. Remove the screw and unplug the wiring to free the actuator switch.
