How to Replace a Glow Rod in a Goodman Gas Heater

Goodman gas heaters work with a type of igniter, commonly known as a glow rod, which heats rapidly to a high temperature to ignite the gas. The glow rod is a 1/4-inch in diameter cylinder pointed at the gas valve above the burner inside the heater. The rod is wired at the opposite end to a power socket that provides electricity to heat the glow rod. If the part wears out, the heater will not operate. The replacement part, also known as a hot surface igniter, is available at HVAC supply stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the heater off and wait for it to cool down.

    • 2

Unplug the electrical cord that provides power to the ignition system then close the gas valve on the fuel line connected to the heater. Turn the knob on the line clockwise.

    • 3

Remove the cover panel on the heater to expose the gas valve and glow rod mounted above the burner assembly.

    • 4

Extract the screws in the metal plate that hold the glow rod to the metal support inside of the heater. Hold the center of the glow rod in one hand while unplugging the part with your other hand. The wires connected to the back of the glow rod fit inside a power plug connected to an electrical outlet in the heater. Pull the plug to disconnect the glow rod.

    • 5

Plug in the new glow rod to the power outlet and set the housing against the metal support. Secure the glow rod to the support with the screws removed in Step 4.

    • 6

Reattach the cover panel with the screws.

    • 7

Plug in the power cord and open the gas valve in the line connected to the heater.
