How to Replace a Maytag PAV3360 Thrust Washer

Manufactured by Whirlpool Corp., the PAV3360 is a residential, top-loading washing machine from Maytag's Performa line of appliances. The machine uses a disc-like bearing, known as a thrust washer, to hold the clutch components to the motor shaft on the gear case. When the thrust washer starts to wear out, the appliance may emit a screech during the spin cycle. Replacing the thrust washer will correct the problem. However, due to the difficulty of the repair, you may wish to call a professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the appliance from its power source to avoid electric shock while replacing the thrust washer. Turn off the water supply to the machine as well.

    • 2

Move the washer away from the wall and detach the hoses connected to the rear panel. Pinch the squeeze clamp to free the drain hose from its connector. Turn the screw clamps to disconnect the water supply hoses.

    • 3

Remove the agitator cap to access the agitator bolt and washer. Hold the bottom of the agitator and remove the bolt and washer with a 7/16-inch socket wrench. Lift the assembly out of the appliance and set it aside.

    • 4

Place a towel or felt-backed tarp on the floor behind the washer. Lower the washer onto its back. The appliance is very heavy; consider this step a two-person job if you're not confident in your ability to perform it safely on your own.

    • 5

Locate the motor assembly under the washer. Find and release the metal clips holding the pump to the top of the assembly. Push the pump and two connected hoses to either side of the washer cabinet.

    • 6

Detach the wiring from the harness on the motor assembly; grasp the plastic connectors and pull firmly. Remove the wires from the plastic clip on the side of the motor.

    • 7

Remove the gear case bolts with a 1/2-inch socket wrench to free the motor assembly. Pull the motor assembly out through the bottom of the washer and place it on a towel.

    • 8

Find the disc-like thrust washer at the bottom of the motor shaft. Slide off the thrust washer, paying special attention to how it was threaded onto the shaft. Slip the new thrust washer onto the shaft and slide it into place.
