How to Replace the Clutch in a Maytag FAV9800 Tl Washer

Unplug your Maytag washer from the wall outlet.

Push a large, flat head screwdriver into the front corner seam on your Maytag washing machine. Slightly twist the screwdriver to pop the top panel off of the washer. Lift up on the front of the top panel to open the top of the machine.

Insert a 5/16-inch nut driver into the top of the cabinet to remove the front corner hex head screws. Lift up on the front panel of the washer to release it from the bottom clips on the washer’s frame.

Pull the washer from the wall far enough to tilt it back against the wall then raise the bottom front of the machine about 45 degrees off the floor. Place wood or cinder blocks underneath the washer to secure it in the raised position.

Locate the drive motor tensioning bolt on the bottom of the washer between the clutch pulley and the pump toward the front of the machine. The washer’s drive belt sits directly behind it. Use a 1/2-inch socket and socket wrench to loosen the bolt.

Remove the drive belt from the clutch pulley. Turn the 3/8-inch clutch pulley bolt in the center of the clutch pulley clockwise with a 3/8-inch socket. Pull the clutch pulley out of the washer.

Install a replacement clutch pulley into the washer and secure it with the bolt provided.

Wrap the drive belt around the pulley. Pull the motor tensioning bolt forward and tighten it to place tension on the belt.

Lower the washer back to the floor and replace the front panel on the washer. Lower the top panel onto the washer cabinet. Push on the top until it snaps onto the clips on the front panel. Push the washer back against the wall and restore power to the appliance.
