How to Fix the Outer Tub of My GE Washer That Is Leaking

When you find standing water on the floor of your laundry room, you must determine when the leak occurs and the leak location. If your washer leaks all the time and it isn’t coming from your fill hoses, the main tub seal probably has failed. If the leak occurs only during the spin cycle, the plastic outer washtub has split or is punctured. Fixing the outer tub, whether it needs a new seal or a new tub, requires disassembling the washer to gain access to the leak.

  • 2-inch-wide putty knife
  • Assorted screwdrivers
  • Socket extension

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the GE washer from your electrical outlet. Release the front panel from the machine by inserting a sturdy, 2-inch-wide putty knife into the seam between the top panel and the front panel. Depress the clips holding the front panel to the GE cabinet that are located about 4 inches from each side of the cabinet.

    • 2

Pull the hose from the bottom of the bleach dispenser located in the front left corner of the washer’s top panel. Remove the screw from each front corner holding the top panel to the side panels of the washer. Raise the front panel off the cabinet, and let it rest against the wall behind your GE washer.

    • 3

Pop the cap off the GE washer’s agitator. Attach a socket extension to a socket wrench to reach the agitator bolt inside the agitator. Remove the agitator bolt. Lift the agitator from the main washtub.

    • 4

Unsnap the balance ring assembly from the washtubs. Push down on the assembly above the clip with one hand as you pull out on the clip with the other. Repeat this for all the clips holding the balance assembly ring. Pull the ring off the tubs.

    • 5

Slide a spanner wrench over the hub nut holding the main tub in the washer. Turn the wrench clockwise by hitting it with a hammer to loosen it. Remove the hub nut from the agitator shaft, and lift the main washtub from the washer to expose the drive block.

    • 6

Hold the hammer sideways and strike the bottom edge of the drive block to remove it from the agitator shaft. Have an assistant lift the outer washtub to take the weight off the suspension rods supporting the washtub.

    • 7

Unhook each spring connected to the bottom of the suspension rod from the washtub. Repeat this with the remaining three suspension rods. Allow the suspension rods to hang free in the washing machine cabinet.

    • 8

Disconnect the wiring harness from the motor beneath the washtub. Remove the green screw that holds the green ground wire to the frame of the washer. Loosen the hose clamps on the small pressure switch hose and the drain hose. Remove both these hoses from the outer washtub.

    • 9

Remove the outer washtub and the platform assembly from the cabinet. Turn the washtub upside-down. Remove the four bolts holding the platform assembly to the washtub. Pull the assembly and the transmission from the outer washtub.

    • 10

Push the tub seal from the center hole located in the bottom of the outer washtub. Push a new tub seal into the washtub. If the outer washtub has a crack, replace the washtub at this time. Insert a new tub seal into the new washtub before reassembling the GE washer.

    • 11

Reverse the disassembly steps to reassemble your GE washer.
