Removing the Lennox Flame Sensor

Lennox manufactures an extensive line of residential gas furnaces that use an internal component known as a flame sensor to ensure that the appliance operates safely. The flame sensor is designed to shut off the main burner and gas supply if the flame isn't detected. It may be necessary to occasionally remove the flame sensor for cleaning, repair or replacement. Removing a Lennox furnace flame sensor is a simple task that takes less than five minutes to complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the switch that supplies the electricity to the furnace. Locate the switch on the side of the furnace or on the wall near the appliance. Disconnect the electrical supply from your home's circuit breaker box if your Lennox furnace model lacks a dedicated "On/Off" switch; locate the switch that corresponds to the appliance and flip it to the "Off" position.

    • 2

Grasp the sides of the access panel on the front of the furnace. Pull the panel straight up to disengage the retaining clips on the bottom of the furnace cabinet. Remove the burner compartment panel if your Lennox furnace has two front access panels; this is the lower front panel in downflow models, and the upper front panel in upflow models. Set aside the removed furnace access panel.

    • 3

Locate the flame sensor to the left of the gas burner assembly. Look for a thin metal rod that's held in place with a single screw.

    • 4

Pull firmly on the plastic wiring connector to detach the two wires from the flame sensor terminal. Remove the mounting screw to free the flame sensor component.

    • 5

Reverse the process to reinstall the flame sensor and replace the removed furnace panel.
