How to Replace a Basement Washing Machine Sink Water Pump

A sink water pump for a basement washing machine is typically used to help drain the appliance at the end of a wash cycle, particularly if the washing machine is below the level of the drain. The pump may also be used to recycle gray water for the second wash during a cycle, rather than filling the washing machine with fresh water twice during a cycle. Replacing a pump is a simpler task than installing a pump for the first time since many of the connections are already in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the washing machine and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Unplug the sink pump power cord as well.

    • 2

Drain the wash sink of water until it is empty.

    • 3

Twist the valve knobs for the washing machine's hot and cold water supply clockwise until tight. Although water will not be flowing through the equipment while replacing the pump, shutting off the water is an essential safety precaution.

    • 4

Loosen the nuts in the clamp bolts that secure the two hoses to the pump, using an adjustable wrench. Pull the hoses off the old pump. A small amount of dripping water is normal.

    • 5

Use the adjustable wrench to unscrew the large metal or plastic nut on the end of the drain pipe where it connects to the pump, typically in the middle of the component. Disconnect the pump from the pipe.

    • 6

Remove the screws holding the pump to the wall or to the mounting bracket if you have a submersible pump in the wash sink, using a screwdriver. Lift and remove the old pump.

    • 7

Secure the new pump to the wall or the in-sink mounting bracket with screws.

    • 8

Wrap plumber's tape around the threading on the drain pipe. Connect the pipe to the new pump's drain port and tighten the nut with the adjustable wrench.

    • 9

Connect the two hoses to their respective ports on the new pump and tighten the nuts in the clamp bolts to secure each hose.

    • 10

Dry your hands before plugging in the power cords for the new pump and the washing machine.

    • 11

Unscrew the water valve knobs for the washing machine.

    • 12

Prime the pump according to the procedures for your particular model. This typically involves filling the sink with water before switching on the pump. Verify the pump's reset button is pushed in at the closed position.
