Before opening the appliance to look for the capacitors, turn off all profile controls and wait for the oven to cool if you've been cooking. Once the appliance cools to room temperature, shut off the electricity to the Profile at the circuit breaker.
Remove the bolts holding the back cover panel to the Profile. A nut driver with a 1/4-inch socket gets the job done quickly, although you can also use pliers or a wrench. Set aside the panel.
The two capacitors in the GE Profile are cylindrical and slightly larger than a D-size battery. Each has two terminals on top connected to a pair of wires. The capacitors are mounted near the top of the oven, below the control panel.
If you need to remove, test or replace a capacitor, the part must be discharged before it can be handled safely. To do this, pull off the wires one at a time from the two posts on the top of the capacitor, then place the edge of an insulated screwdriver on one of the capacitor terminals while wearing work gloves. Slide the metal end of the screwdriver along the first capacitor terminal until it touches the second terminal. This removes the electric charge, which may be accompanied by a loud popping sound. Repeat for the second capacitor before removing the parts from the Profile.
