How to Replace a Selector Switch on a GE Cooktop

GE manufactures a wide array of cooking appliances, including a line of residential cooktops that can be built directly into kitchen counter tops. GE cooktop burners are controlled by external knobs that fit over the shafts of internal selector switches. Also known as infinite switches, cooktop selector switches allow you to control the temperature of the burners. On some models, the selector switches can also be used to change the size of burners from 7 inches to 9 inches. If a selector switch on your GE cooktop breaks, you can replace it in less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

      Locate the main electrical service panel in your home. Open or remove the service panel cover to reveal the fuses or circuit breaker switches. Remove the fuse that supplies the electricity to the cooktop or flip the corresponding circuit breaker switch to the "Off" position. Turn off the gas supply to GE gas cooktops.

      Rotate all of the cooktop knobs to the "Off" position. Pull the knobs straight off of their shafts. Set the removed cooktop knobs aside.

      Remove the mounting screws securing the cooktop to the counter top; the type and number of screws varies by GE cooktop model. Reserve the removed screws for reassembly.

      Detach the wires from the wiring harness at the back of the cooktop. Lift the cooktop off of its base and set it on a padded surface.

      Examine the sides of the cooktop to find the screws holding the cooking surface in place. Remove the screws and lift the cooking surface off of the cooktop base.

      Remove the cooktop control panel cover to expose the selector switches. Detach the wiring from the desired selector switch; pull the wiring connectors off of the switch terminals, using needle-nose pliers. Remove the screws securing the selector switch to the cooktop base. Discard the old selector switch but reserve the screws.

      Hold the replacement selector switch to the cooktop base. Replace and tighten the removed selector switch mounting screws. Slip the wiring connectors onto the selector switch terminals.

      Reverse the order of the steps to reassemble and reinstall the cooktop.
