How to Remove the Oven Wiring From a Range

The oven wiring in an electric range connects from the two heating elements inside the oven to the switch controls on the top of the appliance. The wiring for the surface burners is on a separate circuit. If the wires are worn out or the insulation is beginning to fray, the wires should be replaced for safety if you wish to continue using the range. Before the appliance can be repaired, the old wiring must be removed.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the 220-volt power cord on the back of the range from the wall socket. Pull the range forward from the wall so you can reach the rear of the appliance.

    • 2

Remove the screws holding the metal panel to the back of the range. Set aside the panel while wearing work gloves to protect your hands from the sharp edges.

    • 3

Loosen the screws holding the wires to the terminals for the top and bottom heating elements to pull off the wires. The terminals are flat and rectangular and can be found at the end of each wire. Depending on the age of your range, the wires may be soldered to the terminals, in which case, use the wire cutters to snip the wiring at the point of contact with the terminal. New wiring must be soldered to these terminals.

    • 4

Follow the path of the wiring to the back of the control panel on the range to disconnect the wires at the switch controls. Use the screwdriver to loosen the terminals for removing the wires or cut each wire, if necessary.

    • 5

Pull the wires carefully from the cavity in the back of the range to remove them.
