How to Install an Overload Protector to a Fridge Compressor

The overload protector on a fridge prevents damage to the compressor motor by restricting the flow of current. The protector shuts down like a fuse if the power demand exceeds the capacity of the overload protector. This safety feature helps avoid more extensive damage. Installing the overload protector involves moving the fridge, typically one of the heaviest appliances in a home. Enlist a friend's help to move the fridge so you can install the overload protector.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the power cord for the fridge and slide it away from the wall.

    • 2

Use the screwdriver to remove the rectangular panel at the rear bottom of the fridge. Take off the panel to expose the compressor on the left and a wiring relay box on the right.

    • 3

Press the sides of the relay box to remove the cover panel. The overload protector is inside.

    • 4

Grip the slide-on connectors on the two wires attached to the overload protector and pull the wires off the contacts.

    • 5

Use the tip of a flat-blade screwdriver to release the spring holding the cylindrical overload protector inside the relay box. Remove the old protector.

    • 6

Fasten the two wires onto the corresponding contacts on the new overload protector and set it in position above the spring clip. Press to lock the part in place.

    • 7

Replace the cover on the relay box and fasten the rear panel to the fridge with the screws and screwdriver.

    • 8

Slide the fridge back into place and plug in the power cord.
