How to Replace Outer Glass Whirlpool Oven Door With Tension Clips

Whirlpool Corp. manufactures a wide array of residential cooking appliances, including freestanding ovens and ranges. Whirlpool oven-door assemblies have three heavy-duty glass panels sandwiched inside the door frame and held in place with tension clips. Although the glass panels are designed to withstand normal wear and tear, they're not exactly shatterproof. The outer glass panel is particularly susceptible to breaking when the oven door is slammed. Fortunately, you can replace the outer-glass oven-door panel in less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power supply to the Whirlpool oven or range; unplug the appliance or flip the appropriate circuit breaker switch to the "Off" position. Shut off the gas supply to Whirlpool gas ranges.

    • 2

Open the oven door 2 to 3 inches to put it in the "Broil" stop position. Firmly grip the left and right sides of the door. Lift the oven door straight up, and pull it toward you approximately 2 inches to disengage the hinge brackets. Raise the door to the closed position, and pull the entire door assembly away from the appliance. Place the oven-door assembly on a padded surface, with the inside panel facing up.

    • 3

Remove the screws from the metal retainer along the bottom edge of the door assembly; the type and number of screws varies by Whirlpool oven model. Set aside the removed retainer and screws.

    • 4

Lift the inside glass panel from the bottom edge, and pull it toward you to disengage the tension clips under the door-handle assembly. Carefully slide the glass panel out of the retaining covers on the sides of the door assembly. Place the removed glass panel on a padded surface, or lean it carefully against a wall.

    • 5

Take out the screws securing the handle assembly to the door assembly. Set the removed handle assembly and screws aside. Pull the retaining covers off the left and right sides of the door assembly.

    • 6

Remove the retaining panel at the top of the outer oven-glass panel. Slide the outer oven-glass panel straight up and out of the door assembly to disengage the tension clips on the outer door frame.

    • 7

Align the sides of the replacement outer oven-glass panel with the tension clips on the outer door frame. Slide the outer oven-glass panel into the door assembly, and replace the retaining panel.
