How to Replace a Tub in a Front-Loading LG

LG Electronics offers a wide variety of laundry appliances, including several lines of front-loading washing machines. LG front-load washers have stainless steel tubs encased in a hard-plastic outer drum. If the tub in your LG front-loading washing machine gets damaged, you can replace just the tub rather than the entire appliance. However, this repair isn't for the novice do-it-yourselfer. Replacing the tub in a front-loading LG is a time-consuming repair that requires extensive washer disassembly.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the hot and cold water supply taps on the wall behind the washing machine. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet to avoid serious electrical injury. Release the screw clamps holding the supply hoses to the ports on the back of the washer.

    • 2

Unscrew and remove the screws on the back of the washer's top cover; the type and number of screws varies by model. Pull the cover toward you one to two inches and lift it off the appliance.

    • 3

Slide out the detergent drawer and depress the locking tab at the back of the component. Pull the drawer from its housing to expose the mounting screws securing the control panel to the washer cabinet. Remove the mounting screws on the front and back of the control panel. Release the retaining clips at the top of the panel and fold it back to rest on the frame of the machine.

    • 4

Remove the retaining wire from the perimeter of the rubber door seal and fold the seal back inside the tub. Remove the mounting screws holding the door interlock assembly to the front panel. Detach the wiring from the back of the assembly.

    • 5

Open the pump filter cover and disconnect the drainage hose. Remove the pump filter housing and the lower front panel mounting screw. Take out the screws at the top of the front panel. Lift the panel up and away from the LG washing machine.

    • 6

Unfasten the bolts securing the concrete weights to the top and bottom of the drum assembly. Lift the weights out of the appliance cabinet and set them aside.

    • 7

Unplug the wiring from the heater housing, located at the bottom of the outer drum assembly. Remove the heater wiring from the plastic retaining clips. Loosen the heater mounting bolt and pull the heater from its housing.

    • 8

Loosen the screw clamp securing the sump assembly to the port on the bottom of the outer drum. Pull the sump assembly to separate it from the port.

    • 9

Remove the screws fastening the rear service panel. Slide the panel up to disengage the cabinet retaining clips.

    • 10

Remove the belt from the drive pulley. Detach the bolt at the center of the pulley assembly, then set the assembly aside. Disconnect the wiring connectors from the motor harness. Remove the bolts securing the motor to the outer drum. Unbolt the support legs at the bottom of the outer drum assembly.

    • 11

Lift the suspension springs at the top of the drum assembly off of their hooks and pull the entire drum assembly out through the front of the washer cabinet. Place the assembly on a flat surface padded with an old towel.

    • 12

Remove the fasteners holding the halves of the outer drum together; these may be screws, bolts or clips, depending on your model. Separate the halves out of the outer drum and remove the tub.

    • 13

Insert the replacement tub into the outer drum. Hold the halves of the drum together and replace the fasteners. Lower the drum assembly into the washer cabinet and hang it by its suspension springs.

    • 14
