How to Change the Door Gasket on a Whirlpool Washer Model GHW9150PWO

The GHW9150PWO is a high-efficiency, front-loading automatic washing machine that's part of Whirlpool's Duet line of appliances. Whirlpool Duet washers use a thick rubber gasket to make the door opening watertight. Over time, this gasket can develop cracks and tears that allow water to escape. If you see water trickling from the door opening during a washing cycle, it's time to change the rubber door gasket. Changing the gasket on a GHW9150PWO washer is an extensive task that's not for the novice do-it-yourselfer.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect your Whirlpool washer from its power source before servicing it; never attempt to disassemble the appliance while it's plugged in. Turn off the hot and cold water inlet valves at the back of the washer. Pinch or unscrew the clamps securing the drain and water inlet hoses to the ports on the rear appliance panel.

    • 2

Unfasten the three screws holding the top panel to the back of the washer cabinet, using a six-pointed-star screwdriver. Lift the panel off of the machine and stand it against a wall. Handle the panel with care to avoid scratching its enamel finish.

    • 3

Depress the locking tab at the back of the detergent drawer and slide the drawer from its housing. Remove the six-point-star screw on the left side of the drawer housing and depress the locking tab on the right side of the control panel. Open the door of the washing machine and find the groove in the bottom of the control panel; press the tip of a flat-head screwdriver into the groove to release the retaining clip. Pull the control panel away from the washer and disconnect the ribbon connector from the wiring harness on the back of the panel.

    • 4

Remove the three screws securing the lower front service panel, using the six-pointed star screwdriver. Lift the service panel up slightly and pull it toward you to remove it.

    • 5

Find the tension spring at the bottom of the door opening. Stretch the spring and slip the connected retaining wire off the perimeter of the rubber door gasket. Work carefully to avoid damaging the somewhat fragile tension spring component.

    • 6

Fold the rubber door gasket back inside the washer tub to gain access to the door interlock assembly. Unfasten the three six-pointed-star screws holding the interlock assembly to the back of the front panel. Remove the interlock assembly from its housing and unclip the wires connected to the component.

    • 7

Take out the two screws at the top of the front panel. Find and remove the two corresponding screws at the bottom of the panel. Grab the sides of the front panel and pull it toward you to separate it from the washer. Lean the removed front panel against the wall.

    • 8

Turn the Phillips screw in the gasket retaining clamp counterclockwise to loosen it. Remove the retaining clamp and peel the rubber gasket off of the door opening. Discard the damaged rubber gasket.

    • 9

Orient the replacement gasket so the "weep holes" are at the bottom of the door opening. Remove the cap from the water inlet nozzle and slip the nozzle through the hole in the gasket; replace the removed cap. Stretch the rubber gasket over the door opening and replace the retaining clamp and clamp screw.
