How to Replace the Hub Seal on an Amana ALW880QAW

Amana is an American appliance manufacturing company founded in 1934. The Amana ALW880QAW is a residential, top-loading, super-capacity washer with 13 washing cycles. Amana washers contain an internal component known as a hub seal that keeps the tub watertight. Over time, the hub seal can warp or crack, allowing water to leak out through the transmission assembly. Replacing the hub seal in an Amana ALW880QAW washer requires the disassembly of several tub components.

Instructions

    • 1

Close the hot and cold water supply valves on the wall behind the washer for the duration of your repairs. Unplug the washing machine before servicing it to prevent serious electrical injury.

    • 2

Open the washing machine lid. Reach inside the washer tub and grab the agitator directly under its lip. Pull the agitator assembly straight up and lift it out of the tub; use a rocking motion to wiggle the agitator off the drive bell, if necessary. Set the removed agitator assembly on a padded surface.

    • 3

Use an adjustable wrench to remove the 7/16 bolt from the top of the drive bell. Pry the drive bell off the transmission shaft with the small flat-head screwdriver and lift it out of the washer tub.

    • 4

Insert the tip of a flat-head screwdriver under the edge of the old hub seal. Work the screwdriver around the perimeter of the seal to pry it off the hub assembly. Pull the seal up and slide it off the transmission shaft.

    • 5

Clean the hub assembly seal mounting area thoroughly before installing the replacement hub seal. Wipe dust and dirt from the mounting area with a sponge moistened in warm, soapy water. Scrub the area with fine-grit sandpaper to remove rust or other stubborn buildup. Dry the hub assembly mounting area with a soft cloth.

    • 6

Lubricate the inside of the replacement seal with liquid laundry detergent. Apply a thin coat of general purpose lithium grease to the seal's inner lips. Rub a small amount of grease on the transmission output shaft and seal mounting area.

    • 7

Thread the seal onto the transmission shaft and push it down to the hub assembly. Press down on the seal with the small end of a number 293P4 seal tool to lock it into place.
