Blue Flame Wall Heater Pilot Assembly

The pilot valve on a Blue Flame wall heater works with an ignitor to light the gas from the burner. Under normal operation, the pilot produces a flame that burns constantly at a low level. The flame ignites the burner in response to changes in room temperature or adjustments to the heater's thermostat. The pilot valve attaches to the gas valve via a long, flexible tube. Both the pilot valve and tube are typically sold as a unit. Replacing the pilot valve takes less than an hour to do.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your Blue Flame heater at the thermostat control on the unit and wait until the heater drops to room temperature.

    • 2

Close the gas valve on the fuel line connected to the heater by twisting it clockwise. The wall heater uses a push-button ignitor so there is no electrical cord to disconnect.

    • 3

Take off the cover on the heater by removing the screws in the panel with a screwdriver. The pilot light valve is a short piece of curved or L-shaped pipe mounted on a metal bracket along with the ignitor, which resembles a spark plug.

    • 4

Follow the path of the tube on the back of the pilot valve to its connection point on the gas valve. Unscrew the nut at the end of the pipe with an adjustable wrench to disconnect it from the valve.

    • 5

Take off the nut immediately behind the pilot valve where it connects to the bracket adjacent to the ignitor plug. Now you can slide the entire pilot valve and tube out of the mounting bracket. Remove this assembly from the heater and take it with you to an HVAC parts store or repair shop for the right replacement.

    • 6

Slide the tube on the new pilot valve through the top hole on the bracket. Secure the pilot valve to the bracket with the nut removed in Step 4. Before tightening the nut, verify the open end of the pilot valve points toward the ignitor.

    • 7

Apply pipe sealant to the threaded port on the gas valve with the applicator brush on the cap under the sealant.

    • 8

Twist the nut at the end of the tube on the other end of the pilot valve clockwise to secure it to the threaded port treated with the sealant. Tighten the connection with the adjustable wrench.

    • 9

Replace the cover panel on the heater and fasten it with its screws.

    • 10

Twist the knob or lever on the gas valve counterclockwise to release fuel to the heater.
