How to Balance a Washing Machine Tub With Springs

That familiar banging noise and dance is a clear signal your washing machine is out of balance. Traditionally, washing machine tubs are held in place through a system of springs, counterweights or pistons. Having the tub’s springs fail is only one potential cause of an imbalanced washing machine. Try to rebalance the washer before opening up the unit to check whether the springs are worn, loose or require replacement.

Instructions

  1. Leveling the Washer

    • 1

Unplug the washing machine and shut the lid. Lift and tilt the washing machine’s back approximately 2 to 3 inches off the ground to allow the back legs to self-level.

    • 2

Lower the washing machine carefully onto the floor and place a carpenter’s level on top. If the machine isn’t level, kneel onto the floor and screw the front feet completely into the machine.

    • 3

Set the level near the front of the machine and adjust the front feet one-quarter inch at a time until the machine is level. Plug in the washing machine and run it through all the cycles while the machine is empty. If it still shakes and bangs, move onto the next section.

    Checking the Springs

    • 4

Unplug the washing machine and open the access panel. Depending on the machines’ manufacturer or model, the access panel usually is located on the front or top of the unit. Either way, the majority of access panels are held in place with retaining clips. Locate these retaining clips and slide a butter knife between the clip and the machine to remove the access panel.

Locate the springs, which hold the outer tub in place. Depending on the make and model, you might have several springs holding the tub in place in multiple locations.

    • 6

Examine the springs. In some cases the springs come loose, causing the outer tub to shake when agitating. Refer to the machine’s manual or consult a professional to reattach the springs. The springs might also be worn or damaged, requiring replacement. Once again, consult your owner’s manual or consult an expert before performing this maintenance.
