How to Replace the Pilot Generator on a Wall Heater

The pilot generator in a gas wall heater is an assembly consisting of the ignition system and a small L-shaped pipe for the pilot light. The igniter lights the pilot flame on the end of the L-shaped pipe. The pilot then lights the burner in the wall heater to produce heat to warm the room. Buy a new pilot generator assembly from your heater's manufacturer, or take the old part to an HVAC shop for help in matching it with a new unit. Replacing the assembly takes less than an hour using handheld tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the control knob on the wall heater to the "Off" position. Turn the lever in the valve on the heater's gas line clockwise to shut off the gas while repairing the unit.

    • 2

Unscrew and remove the cover panel on the wall heater, using a screwdriver. Locate the pilot generator in front of the burner.

    • 3

Follow the two wires on the end of the pilot generator to the small plug that attaches to the back of the igniter button. Detach the plug from the back of the button.

    • 4

Follow the pipe from the L-shaped pilot to the connection on the larger pipe inside the heater. Unscrew the nut on the end of the smaller pipe to release it from the larger line.

    • 5

Loosen the screws in the mounting bracket holding the pilot generator. Pull out the assembly from the bracket and remove it from the heater.

    • 6

Slide the new pilot generator into the bracket in the same position as the old part and tighten the bracket screws.

    • 7

Connect the wired plug on the end of the pilot generator to the socket inside the heater.

    • 8

Apply gas pipe sealant to the threaded pipe inside the heater using the brush on the bottle cap for the sealant. Immediately screw the nut at the end of the tube on the pilot generator to the threaded pipe treated with sealant. Tighten it with the wrench.

    • 9

Replace the cover on the wall heater and secure it with the screws.

    • 10

Turn the lever on the gas valve counterclockwise to release gas to the heater.
