How to Fix a Whirlpool Ice Maker Door Wheel

A Whirlpool ice maker with a through-the-door dispenser uses a rubber wheel, or flap, to cover the opening and keep cold air from escaping. This part seals the dispenser port when not in use and swings open when the lever recessed in the door is pressed to release ice. If the wheel separates from the hinges, you may be able to fix it. If the wheel itself is torn, the only repair is to replace the part, which is available at online retailers and appliance repair stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the unit's power cord from the wall socket.

    • 2

Lift out and remove the drip tray in the door compartment on the front of the unit.

    • 3

Remove the two screws from the top underside edge of the front cover on the ice maker using a star-tipped screwdriver. Pull off the cover gently.

    • 4

Unplug the circuit board at the top of the ice maker dispenser through the front.

    • 5

Take out the three screws holding the door wheel in place, using the star-tipped screwdriver. Inspect the wheel for damage. If it is out of alignment, reattach to the round port and secure with the screws. If the wheel is damaged, continue with the installation of the replacement part.

    • 6

Remove the three screws holding the wheel. Place the new wheel in position and secure with the three screws. Pull gently on the opposite edge of the wheel to verify that it moves freely.

    • 7

Plug in the circuit board inside the dispenser.

    • 8

Replace the front cover and secure with the two screws, using the star-tipped screwdriver. Set the drip pan in position.

    • 9

Plug in the unit's power cord.
