How to Remove a Frigidaire Oven Gas Valve

Gas-fired ovens are fitted with safety devices designed to prevent raw gas from escaping from the range. Frigidaire ovens are fitted with a safety gas shut-off valve that senses oven igniter temperature to ensure that it’s hot enough to ignite the incoming gas. If the igniter malfunctions, the shut-off valve closes immediately, preventing hazardous gas from escaping into the kitchen. If your oven fails to light up, check if the igniter is glowing red hot, and if it appears to be working, then replace the safety shut-off valve immediately.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the range's electrical power cord from the wall outlet and turn the gas supply shut-off valve to the “off” position before starting work.

    • 2

Pull the appliance away from the wall to gain access to the back. Open the oven door and remove the trays.

    • 3

Remove the two screws on the back of the oven base panel with a Phillips-head screwdriver if applicable on your particular model. Pivot the back of the panel upwards by lifting it by the slots on either side. Slide the panel toward the top of the oven. Lift the panel to withdraw the front retaining tabs out of their slots and remove the panel.

    • 4

Remove the two Phillips-head retaining screws on both sides on the front of the flame cover fitted to the bottom of the oven. Slide the cover toward the oven door until the two tabs on the back clear the slots on the rear oven wall. Lift the back of the cover; slide it upward toward the back to release the front retaining tabs and lift the cover out.

    • 5

Undo the Phillips-head screw on the front of the burner tube and remove the L-shaped retaining clip. Slide the burner tube forward off the gas port on the back wall and lay it in the bottom of the oven. Do not disconnect the wires on the burner tube igniter.

    • 6

Remove the four screws holding the oblong box-shaped panel on the lower back of the stove. Lift the panel off to reveal the gas safety shut-off valve.

    • 7

Slide the tip of a flat-bladed screwdriver under each of the black electrical spade connectors on the upper left of the gas valve and lever the spade connectors off the terminals. Make a mental note that the white wire fits on the rear terminal and the red wire fits on the front terminal.

    • 8

Undo the brass gas line connector nut on the left of the valve with a 9/16 open-ended wrench. Remove the two Phillips-head screws holding the valve onto the back of the stove and remove the defective valve.

    • 9

Install the replacement valve by reversing the above procedures.
