How to Repair an Eighteen-Volt Ridgid Reciprocating Saw

Home hobbyists and handymen enjoy fabricating many objects, such as plumbing pipes or wood lengths, for projects that improve the household. A leaking pipe can be easily replaced and new shelves will install neatly along the wall. However, each homeowner must use the correct tools to complete a project correctly. An 18-volt Ridgid reciprocating saw is a perfect tool for both metal and wood fabrications, but the tool might need repair after many project uses. Basic troubleshooting techniques will prevent any major repairs and negate the need to spend a lot of money with a labor-intensive repair person.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the battery pack off of the saw by pressing on the release latches with your hands.

    • 2

Inspect the battery pack's contacts. Any discoloration or film across the contacts can impede the flow of electricity. Rub sandpaper lightly across the contacts until they shine and reflect light easily. Press a rag against the contacts to remove any sandpaper debris from the surface.

    • 3

Repeat step 2 for the contacts directly on the saw's main body.

    • 4

Inspect the release latches on the battery pack. Confirm that no cracks or broken pieces are visible on the latches. Loose latches can make the saw work intermittently since the electricity is not steadily reaching the internal circuitry.

    • 5

Examine the switch trigger. Verify that no debris, such as wood shavings, are jammed in the mechanism. Any object preventing movement of the trigger will cause intermittent powering of the saw. Blow out any debris with canned air.

    • 6

Repeat step 6 for the blade assembly. No debris should hinder the rapid movement of the blade. Use caution while working near the sharp blade; make sure that the battery pack is removed during this process.

    • 7

Inspect the lock off button's positioning. This button should be turned off when operating the saw; the saw will not power on if the button is in the on position.

    • 8

Examine the supplied charger with the saw. The power cord should not have any cuts or exposed wiring. A faulty charger will not charge the battery pack sufficiently, causing the saw to work intermittently. Replace the charger assembly if there is any poor visible wiring.
