How to Replace the Igniter Harness on a GE JGS968 Range Top

Your GE Profile 30-inch slide-in gas range comes equipped with an electronic ignition system that allows you to control the burners from the control panel along the front of the range. When you turn the control knobs to “LITE,” the gas valves open to allow gas to flow through the manifold. The igniter creates a spark to light the gas and create a flame at the burner. When the igniter continually clicks or fails to click at all, the switch igniter harness has failed and needs replacing.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your GE slide-in range. Turn off the gas supply valve.

    • 2

Pull the control knobs off the front of the glass touch panel to expose the retainers beneath them. Twist the retainers counterclockwise with your fingers to loosen and remove them.

    • 3

Lift the glass touch panel from the interior control panel. Reach beneath the touch panel to unplug the wire harness connecting it to the interior control panel. Set the glass touch panel aside.

    • 4

Remove the four screws holding the metal interior control panel to the range. Lift the panel to expose the four gas valve stems and the original igniter harness.

    • 5

Trace the igniter harness wires to the right side of the range. Unplug the harness from the electronic control module.

    • 6

Grab the square igniters on each of the gas valve stems. Pull the igniters off the stems, and discard the old igniter harness.

    • 7

Push the new igniters on to each of the valve stems. Pull the end of the harness into the electronic control module.

    • 8

Replace the metal interior control panel. Secure it with the four panel screws.

    • 9

Plug the glass touch panel wire harness into the back of the touch panel. Place it over the valve control stems and against the range.

    • 10

Hand-twist the retainers onto the stems to secure the glass touch panel. Push the control knobs onto the stems.

    • 11

Plug your GE slide-in range back into the outlet. Turn on the gas supply valve.
