DIY Kenmore Oven Round Ignitor Replacement

Kenmore gas ovens have two burners, located at the top and bottom of the oven cavity. Each burner has its own ignitor, which produces several sparks that ignite the gas produced by the burner when they come in contact with it. Ignitors are available in two styles, round and square, although both ignitors function and attach to the burners in the same manner. Many Kenmore model ranges manufactured by Whirlpool utilize a round ignitor, while models manufactured by Frigidaire are equipped with square ignitors. Round ignitors are connected to the burner, so the burner assembly must be replaced as well if the ignitor fails.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the range breaker in your home's main service panel.

    • 2

Open the oven door, and then flip down the hinge locks, which are located on the door hinges. Close the door to the broil-stop position, and then lift the door up and off the range.

    • 3

Remove the lower panel of the oven by removing the screws at the rear of the panel, and then lifting the panel up and out of the range. Skip this step if you're replacing the broil ignitor.

    • 4

Remove the screws securing the burner shield, and then remove the burner shield.

    • 5

Remove the mounting screws at the front and rear of the burner, and then pull the burner away so the ignitor wire connector is accessible.

    • 6

Pull the wire connector off the ignitor terminal, and then remove and discard the ignitor.

    • 7

Connect the wire connector to the terminal on the new ignitor, and then install and secure the new burner assembly, using the mounting screws you removed in Step 5.

    • 8

Replace the burner shield, using the screws that you removed in Step 4 to secure it in position.

    • 9

Replace the lower panel of the oven, if replacing the bake ignitor.

    • 10

Lift the oven door at a 45-degree angle, and then insert the hinges into the hinge slots. Open the door completely and move the hinge locks up to lock the door in position. Close the oven door.

    • 11

      Restore power to the range.
