How to Troubleshoot Kenmore Dryer Timers

The timer on your Kenmore dryer controls how long the appliance will operate on a specific cycle. If you have a small load of clothes to dry, setting the timer to a shorter duration helps you save energy costs. A malfunctioning dryer timer could cause the appliance to run longer or for less time than you intend. It may also affect drying temperatures, depending on the cycle setting you choose when dialing the timer control. Test the timer with a multimeter to determine whether the part needs replacement.

Instructions

    • 1

      Unplug the Kenmore power cord.

    • 2

Raise the cover on the lint screen on the top right side of your Kenmore and remove the screen to take out the two screws underneath. If your lint screen is in the door, skip this step.

    • 3

Take out the screws in the back and sides of the control panel to tilt the panel forward onto the top of the Kenmore. Do not pull the control panel or attempt to remove it completely, or you will damage the wiring.

    • 4

Grab each wire on the terminals on the rear of the timer with needle-nose pliers to pull off the clips on the timer, which is the main dial on the back of the control panel. The timer is on the right when viewed from the rear of the control panel. Make a note of which wires connect to which terminals to help you reconnect them later.

    • 5

Set the multimeter to test ohms. On some models, this is the RX1 setting.

    • 6

Touch the two probes to one of the wires disconnected from the timer. Depending on your Kenmore model, a normal reading will be in the range of 2,000 to 3,000 ohms if the timer is working properly. A reading of zero or outside the average range means the timer is bad and the part must be replaced to restore normal operation.
