How to Troubleshoot a Kenmore Electrical Stovetop

A Kenmore electric stovetop consists of four burners wired to control knobs for preparing foods in a saucepan, skillet or other surface cooking utensil. If one or more of the elements will not heat, try troubleshooting the stovetop with a simple diagnostic tool known as a multimeter, which tests the circuits to determine if an element is burned out, or if there is a wiring problem inside the stove top. Multimeters are available at electronics stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the electricity to the Kenmore stovetop, either by turning off the circuit breaker or unplugging the power cord.

    • 2

Unplug the problem element on the cooktop by pulling straight back from the socket.

    • 3

Set your multimeter to the Rx1 setting for ohms.

    • 4

Place the two probes on the ends of the meter wires on the two connector blades on the end of the element. If the meter displays an infinite readout or does not register at all, the element has failed and must be replaced with a new part. If all elements test in a range of 20 to 50 ohms, there may be a short-circuit with the internal wiring. Contact a repair technician at this point, as there are no user-serviceable components inside the control panel.
