Bellow Mechanical Seal Installation

If you own a front-loading washing machine, you will see the mechanical bellow seal when you open the door. The seal is the rubber gasket that attaches to the doorjamb. The seal is prone to tearing if stabbed with sharp items left in pockets, such as car keys. The seal is also prone to cracking as it ages. You can buy a replacement seal from most appliance repair centers.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the front door to your washing machine and remove the screws that secure the door to the door hinge. Place the door off to the side until you finish installing the replacement bellow seal.

    • 2

Wedge a flat-head screwdriver between the seal and the metal lip on the doorjamb. Slide the screwdriver around the doorjamb until you locate the spring and retainer wedged between the seal and doorjamb lip.

    • 3

Pry the spring out from the retainer with the screwdriver and then place the spring off to the side until you install the replacement bellow seal.

    • 4

Pull down on the seal at the top of the doorjamb and pull it off the lip. The seal will come out only so far. When you feel resistance, look at the exposed doorjamb and locate the retaining clips.

    • 5

Loosen the retaining clips and then pull the seal away from the lip on the doorjamb until you locate the remaining clips. Loosen those clips and then pull the seal off the doorjamb.

    • 6

Slide the replacement seal over the lip on the doorjamb at the bottom of the opening until you get to the first set of retaining clips. Press the seal between the retaining clips and then tighten the clips with the screwdriver.

    • 7

Slide the remaining portion of the seal onto the doorjamb lip and then tighten the second set of retaining clips.

    • 8

Wedge the spring back into the retainer mounted to the doorjamb lip.

    • 9

Reinstall the door onto the door hinge.
