How to Install a Bellow on a Duet

The bellow on a Whirlpool Duet washing machine is the rubber door seal or gasket that keeps water from leaking between the doorjamb and the backside of the door. As the Whirlpool Duet ages, the rubber bellow gasket starts to dry, rot and crack. This will eventually allow water to seep between the mating surfaces and water will get onto the floor in front of the washing machine. The quickest way to repair a leaking bellow is to replace it with a new one that you obtain from a Whirlpool service center.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door and locate all three screws that secure the door to the hinge with a screwdriver. Place the door off to the side.

    • 2

Slide the screwdriver between the bellow seal and the metal retaining ring. Maneuver the screwdriver around the ring until you locate the spring that presses between the seal and retaining ring. Pry the spring out of the retainer with the tip of the screwdriver and then pull the spring out from between the seal and the retaining ring.

    • 3

Grip the seal at the top and pull down and out on the seal. This removes the bellow seal off the metal doorjamb lip. As you pull, you will expose metal retaining clips that secure the seal to the lip.

    • 4

Loosen the screws that secure the retaining clips on place and then pull the seal away from the retaining clips. Repeat this until you remove the entire bellow seal.

    • 5

Place the groove in the center of the bellow seal’s perimeter onto the lip in the doorjamb. Work the seal onto the lip and then tighten the retaining clips as you install the seal.

    • 6

Slide the spring into the retainer by pressing it in with the tip of your screwdriver. Take caution not to tear the bellow seal while you complete this step.

    • 7

Bolt the door back to the hinge with all three screws and your screwdriver.
