How to Replace Cords on Cress Kilns

When the electrical cord on the Cress Kiln is damaged, it is important to replace the cord before using the appliance again. The kiln is an industrial appliance and requires 220-volts or power or more depending on the model. A frayed or broken cord presents a serious fire and electrical shock hazard. It is possible to damage a cord in any number of ways, such as placing a hot object on the cord and melting the insulation or cutting the cord with a sharp object. Because there are multiple plug configurations for a 220-volt or higher outlet, the electrical cord on the Cress Kiln is replaceable.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Cress kiln from its electrical outlet. Do not attempt to replace the cord while still plugged in.

    • 2

Locate the area of the shell housing where the electrical cord enters the kiln. On most Cress kilns, the cord enters the control box located on the front of the machine. In larger models, the cord will enter the rear of the machine.

    • 3

Remove the screws that hold the control panel cover in place and then pull the control panel out of the kiln until you can see where the electrical cord comes into the housing and wires to the transformer's terminal block.

    • 4

Loosen the screws that secure the wires of the electrical cord to the transformer's terminal block with a screwdriver. Note the color of each wire and where it connects before you remove the old cord from the terminal block. You will have two black wires, a green wire and a white wire. The black wires are interchangeable.

    • 5

Pull the electrical cord out of the strain relief mounted to the housing of the Kiln and discard it. The strain relief is the metal bracket that secures to the side of the housing. It protects the wire from getting cut on the sharp metal housing as it passes through.

    • 6

Slide the replacement cord through the strain relief in the side of the housing.

    • 7

Connect the wires of the new plug to the studs on the terminal block. It is important that you maintain the original color code used with the original cord. This means, you connect the two black wires extending from the replacement cord to the same terminals that the original black wires connected to. This is the same for the red wire, green wire and the white wire.

Place the control cover back onto the kiln and secure it with the original screws.
