How to Repaint Your Range

An old range becomes new again with the right paint. As a range ages, sunlight, heat, cold, bumps and bangs affect its outward appearance. Faded or scraped paint leaves the unit looking old and sometimes out of place in a modern kitchen. Replacement is an option but is not cost effective. With the proper heat-resistant paint, it's possible to give your old range a fresh coat.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the range and move to an open area. Place the range on newspaper or an old tarp to protect the surroundings from paint drippings or overspray.

    • 2

Clean the range well with a degreaser. Mix dish soap into a pan of warm water. Use the mixture to clean off all grease, grime and other debris from the range. Allow to dry.

    • 3

Remove the knobs, handles and covers. Lift the range hood and place newspaper over the eye holes and tape in place.

    • 4

Rough the existing paint with sandpaper. Use a medium grit sandpaper to remove the top finish and rough the surface of the range. This allows the new paint to adhere to the surface.

    • 5

Spray the appliance with heat resistant appliance paint. Spray in a smooth, back and forth motion to evenly cover.

    • 6

Allow the appliance to dry for 24 to 48 hours prior to replacing the hardware and plugging in.
