What to Put on Stainless-Steel Scratches on My Refrigerator?

Stainless steel adds an elegant look to your kitchen appliances. The shiny exterior will brighten the room and impress your guests. Stainless steel looks great until you scratch it. Once scratched, the finish is marred and ruins the look of the entire appliance. Once you repair the damage, it will look almost as good as new again.
  1. Know Your Appliance

    • Not all stainless steel is created equal. Plain, uncoated stainless steel is the easiest to repair. If you have simulated stainless steel or a coating that resists fingerprints, you will have a more difficult time repairing the surface. If you do not know what your appliance is covered with, refer to the user’s manual or contact the manufacturer. If it is something other than uncoated stainless steel, you will also need to consult the manufacturer for scratch removal advice.

    Sanding

    • You can treat the scratches by sanding the appliance. Use sandpaper or abrasive pads that range between 80 and 120 grit. Be sure to sand with the grain so you do not cause more damage. Keep sanding until the scratches are gone. You may have to sand it several times, with progressively coarser sandpaper, to completely remove the scratches. You may want to practice on a hidden part of the appliance first to make sure you do it correctly.

    Polishing

    • Once the scratches are removed, you need to polish the entire panel to restore its shine. Just put a dab of stainless-steel polish on a lint-free microfiber cloth and apply it to the scratched panel to bring it back to its previous luster. Stainless-steel polish is also available in spray form at appliance dealers and online.

    Repair Kit

    • You can purchase a stainless-steel repair kit online or in many stores. These kits have everything you need to make your steel appliance look as good as new.
