How to Replace the Standing Pilot With an Ignitor

Older natural gas appliances, such as laundry dryers and ovens, used to have a standing pilot light. This pilot light was a continuous flame that allowed the appliance to power on for use. However, modern appliances use an igniter for powering the machine, saving on energy costs. An appliance owner can replace the standing pilot light with an igniter for an updated power source. Simple steps should be observed for a safe and functional igniter installation.

Things You'll Need

  • Universal retrofit kit
  • Small adhesive tags

Instructions

    • 1

Remove electricity from the appliance. Turn the gas supply off with the appliance's service valve.

    • 2

Tag each wire attached to the original pilot light gas control. For example, the wire connecting the pilot light to ground should be tagged "Ground." Each appliance manufacturer has a different wiring configuration, so make sure to precisely tag each wire for preventing wiring errors.

    • 3

Remove the wires and pilot tube from the gas control. Detach the compression fitting from the gas control. Do not remove the pilot tube and compression fitting attached to the pilot burner.

    • 4

Detach the gas piping and thermocouple lead at the gas control. Remove and discard the gas control assembly.

    • 5

Remove the thermocouple from the pilot burner. Attach the new igniter's ground rod into the thermocouple's prior connection point on the pilot burner.

    • 6

Slip the igniter-sensor mounting bracket over the ground rod. Adjust the mounting set screws with a hex wrench until they are tight.

    • 7

Move the ground rod and igniter-sensor assembly up and down. Verify that the sensor's electrode is within the pilot flame.

    • 8

Install the new gas control module. Attach the pilot gas tubing to the gas control.

    • 9

Connect the tagged wiring to the new gas control. Turn on gas and electrical supply. Test the appliance for functionality.
