How to Switch Three Prong Ovens

Modern electric stoves work with a four-prong power cord. If you have a three-prong cord and move to a new home, you will likely need to change the power cord on the appliance to work with the new electrical outlet. Buy a four-prong cord from an appliance store and install it yourself to save money on a repair technician. Hooking up the new cord takes less than an hour using basic hand tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Take out the metal plate holding the current cord to the back of the oven, using the screwdriver.

    • 2

Remove the nuts inside the oven where the wires are connected to individual poles, using the nut driver.

    • 3

Slip the wires off the poles and remove from the appliance.

    • 4

Loosen the screw on the back of the cover plate to release the power cord. Pull the cord out of the plate.

    • 5

Push the four wires on the new power cord through the hole in the cover plate and tighten the screw in the back of the plate.

    • 6

Slide the connector on the white neutral wire over the center pole and secure it with a nut. Attach the red and black wires to the outer poles and lock them down with nuts. It doesn't matter which of the outer poles you use to connect these two wires. Fasten the yellow and green wire to the separate grounding pole to the left of the electrical box inside the oven.

    • 7

Fasten the cover plate to the back of the oven with the screwdriver.
