How to Change a Belt Replacement on a Hoover Runabout Powermax

The Hoover Runabout Powermax is an upright, canister-style vacuum cleaner with a rubber drive belt to spin the brushes on the bottom of the appliance. If the roller brush on your Hoover no longer spins, or you hear a high-pitched noise when switching on the Hoover, the belt may be stretched or broken and needs to be replaced. This repair takes less than 15 minutes. Buy a replacement belt at an appliance shop. No special tools are needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Hoover's electrical cord and turn the vacuum upside down on a flat surface.

    • 2

Press the foot pedal to disengage the canister and handle so the upper half of the vacuum will lay flat.

    • 3

Twist the two metal latches clockwise a half turn on the metal plate on the bottom of the Hoover to release the plate. Lift off and remove the plate to expose the roller brush and motor drive shaft.

    • 4

Pull straight up on the roller brush to remove it from the left and right brackets inside the Hoover. Slide off and discard the old belt.

    • 5

Slip the new belt onto the roller brush and seat the belt in the center groove on the roller. Push the roller back into the brackets on the left and right sides of the Hoover.

    • 6

Stretch the new belt back to the wheel on the end of the motor drive shaft. Twist the belt a half turn clockwise and slip it onto the groove in the wheel.

    • 7

Align the tabs on the metal plate with the notches on the edge of the Hoover and lower it flush to the underside of the vacuum. Turn the metal latches counterclockwise to lock the plate onto the vacuum. Plug in the power cord and you're ready to vacuum.
