How to Replace the Heating Element in a Kenmore Glass Cooktop

Kenmore glass cooktops have heat-tempered glass on its cooking surface and electrical elements mounted underneath. This simplifies clean-up and maintenance of the cooktop. Like any heating element, the coiled units underneath a Kenmore glass cooktop can burn out and require replacement. The cooktop is designed to raise at an angle to access the heating elements and allow replacement using basic hand tools. Always turn off the power before attempting any repairs on the cooktop.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off power to the Kenmore at the circuit breaker.

    • 2

Open the cabinet doors below the cooktop to find the screws along the front edge holding the cooktop to the top of the cabinet. Remove these screws with the screwdriver.

    • 3

Lift the front edge of the cooktop back toward the wall and prop it up at an angle with a metal or wooden rod.

    • 4

Unscrew the retainer bar on the underside of the cooktop where the bar covers the element you want to replace.

    • 5

Unplug the old heating element from the wired connector.

    • 6

Plug in the new element and reattach the retainer bar below the new part. Repeat for any other broken elements.

    • 7

Remove the rod to lower the cooktop flush with the countertop. Reattach the screws to the underside of the cabinet into the cooktop to hold it securely.

    • 8

Turn on the circuit breaker for the appliance. Check the replaced burner to ensure it is working.
