How to Replace the Heating Element in a Kenmore Glass Top Range

The smooth surface of a Kenmore glass top range lifts at an angle like a car hood for access to the four heating elements mounted underneath. Each element is installed between the heat-treated glass and a steel bracket, where the elment connects to an electrical socket. Replacing an element on a Kenmore glass top range takes less than half an hour using common tools. Buy a new element at Sears, which sells the Kenmore brand, or at an appliance repair shop.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the range and cut the electricity at the circuit breaker. Wait for the range to cool.

    • 2

Open the door on the front of the range to locate the screws along the top lip of the appliance under the cook top.

    • 3

Remove the screws under the range to release the front edge of the cook top. Save the hardware.

    • 4

Raise the glass top at an angle toward the rear of the appliance and hold it upright with the metal rod wedged between the underside of the glass top and the surface edge of the range.

    • 5

Take out the screws holding the metal plate around the heating element you want to replace.

    • 6

Unplug the old element, pulling the part straight back from the power plug.

    • 7

Plug in the new element and secure it with the metal bracket and screws.

    • 8

Remove the metal rod to lower the glass top gently to the surface of the range. Press the top with your palms so the surface is flush with the front edge of the appliance.

    • 9

Insert the screws into the holes in the lip under the glass top and tighten.

    • 10

Close the range door before turning on the power at the circuit breaker.
