How to Clean Evaporative Condensers

Evaporative condensers are the coils on the back of air conditioning (AC) units. When these evaporator coils get dirty, they can cut down on the performance of the unit. This dust and dirt clogs the heat from coming off of the coil. You can clean the evaporator coil on your unit to get it working properly again. You don’t have to be an heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) technician to clean your coil. You can do it yourself with little hassle.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your AC unit from the wall outlet or cut off the power from the breaker box. Your breaker box should be labeled so you know which breaker controls the AC unit.

    • 2

Look on the back of your AC unit and locate the evaporator coil. The evaporator coil is the spiraled coil on the back of the unit.

    • 3

Spray evaporator coil cleaner on your coil and allow it to set in. This should take about 15 minutes to occur. As the coil cleaner soaks in, it will foam up on the coil.

    • 4

Use a garden hose to spray the coil cleaner off of your coil. Make sure that you have no more foam on your coil.

    • 5

Allow the coil to dry naturally.
