How to Change a Kenmore Gas Oven Thermostat

The Kenmore gas oven thermostat controls the heat in the oven. It does this by opening and closing a switch in relation to the heat inside the oven. If the oven starts to cool off, the switch will open and increase the gas flame so that it can get hotter. It is important for this part to work properly, since foods need to cook at specific temperatures. Changing the thermostat is not difficult. It will take about 30 minutes to do the job, using basic tools that are in most home toolboxes.

Remove the grates from the top of each stove burner and set them aside. Raise the top of the range by grasping the sides of the top and lifting it. Prop the top open with the prop rod. Remove the adjustment knob from the thermostat assembly by pulling it straight off.

Remove the retaining bolts from the thermostat using an adjustable wrench. Remove the thermostat from the gas manifold by pulling it apart. Remove and discard the gasket between the thermostat and the gas manifold.
