How to Change Out the Heating Coil on a GE Profile Stove

The GE Profile is a 30-inch electric stove with a smooth glass surface to minimize cleanup from spills. Four heating coils and a warming coil are installed beneath the glass surface, radiating heat upward for cooking. When a coil burns out, you can replace the part yourself with basic tools and save money on a service call. The top of the Profile lifts at an angle, similar to an automobile hood, so you can access the coils underneath. Follow all safety precautions when working on high-voltage appliances.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the circuit breaker that supplies power to your Profile stove at the household breaker panel.

    • 2

Open the front door on the stove and remove the screws along the underside of the door frame at the top of the oven. The screws hold the cooking surface to the top of the Profile cabinet.

    • 3

Raise the top of the Profile at an angle and support it with a metal rod positioned between the top of the appliance cabinet and the underside of the stove surface.

    • 4

Loosen and remove the screws that hold the retainer bracket around the heating coil you need to change out. Remove the bracket to expose the underside of the heating coil.

    • 5

Pull the coil straight out of its electrical sockets.

    • 6

Push the blade connectors on the new coil into the sockets on the underside of the stove.

    • 7

Replace the retainer bracket and secure it with the screws.

    • 8

Remove the metal rod that supports the stove surface and lower it gently onto the top of the Profile's cabinet.

    • 9

Secure the top to the front edge of the door frame with the screws you removed in Step 2.

    • 10

Close the Profile door and flip on the circuit breaker.
