How to Change an Oven Top Broiler Element

Electric ovens broil foods under high temperatures quickly with a top element that radiates heat downward. If the broiler element no longer glows orange when the oven is set to broil or if there are visible cracks or chunks missing in the element, the part may be burned out and require replacement. This simple repair takes less than half an hour, and you'll pay only for the part if you replace the broiler element yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the power to the oven, either by turning off the circuit breaker, removing the fuse from the fuse box, if your home has one, or unplugging the power cord. The first two options are preferable to moving the oven to reach the electrical cord.

    • 2

Lower the oven door to take out the broiler rack and the baking/roasting rack below it.

    • 3

Extract the screws holding the broiler to a metal plate mounted on the back wall of the oven. The plate helps support the element and prevents the part from drooping.

    • 4

Unplug the broiler element and the surrounding metal plate from the interior oven wall.

    • 5

Insert the prongs on the new broiler into the two holes in the oven wall and push until the metal support plate fits snugly against the wall.

    • 6

Tighten the screws into the holes in the new broiler element's support plate.

    • 7

Slide in the racks and shut the door.

    • 8

      Restore power to the oven.
