How to Replace the Radiant Element of a Ceramic Cooktop

Radiant elements on ceramic cooktops direct heat from below the surface of the appliance. The elements are mounted inside support brackets beneath the ceramic cooktop so it's easier to clean surface spills. Replacing a burned-out element involves raising the ceramic cooktop at an angle to access the defective part. Use a metal rod to hold up the cooking surface while you work. The metal edges on the underside of the appliance are sharp, so work carefully to avoid cuts.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the power cord for the cooktop. The cord is either behind the appliance or routed underneath through the cabinet.

    • 2

Remove the screws on the underside of the ceramic cooktop along the front edge where the screws hold the appliance to the top of the cabinet or oven, depending on your cooktop model.

    • 3

Lift the cooktop and hold it up with a metal rod wedged between the countertop and the underside of the cooktop.

    • 4

Extract the screws that hold the support bracket to the bottom of the radiant element to be replaced. Remove the bracket and save the hardware.

    • 5

Pull the element prongs from the electrical connector.

    • 6

Plug in the new element in the same orientation as the old part and reattach the support bracket.

    • 7

Lower the cooktop so it is level with the top of the cabinet or oven.

    • 8

Secure the cooktop with the screws underneath the front edge.

    • 9

Connect the power cord to the outlet.
