How to Replace the Element in a Kenmore Elite Glass Top Stove

The Kenmore Elite is a glass top stove sold by Sears. The cooking elements on this model are built below the heat-treated glass to create a smooth surface that also makes it easier to clean. If an element wears out and the burner no longer heats, changing out the defective part takes less than half an hour with basic tools. Complete the repair yourself to save on the cost of a service call by a repair technician.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the circuit breaker switch or remove the fuse from the fuse box that controls electricity to the Kenmore Elite stove.

    • 2

Open the stove door and remove the screws along the underside of the door frame at the top. The screws hold the glass top in place.

    • 3

Raise the glass top from the front, lifting toward the back, and hold up the surface with a metal rod. Raise the top carefully; the underside has sharp edges.

    • 4

Take out the Phillips head screws in the metal cover that holds the element to be replaced. Remove the cover and set it aside to expose the heating element and power socket.

    • 5

Unplug the element from the socket.

    • 6

Insert the two posts on the new element into the socket and press them in firmly to seat the part.

    • 7

Re-attach the metal cover with the screws.

    • 8

Remove the support rod and lower the Elite stove top slowly back into position.

    • 9

Fasten the glass top to the stove with the screws along the underside of the front edge.

    • 10

Shut the Elite door and turn on the power.
