How to Adjust the Belt on a Maytag Washer

Maytag automatic washing machines are manufactured in a wide range of models, each with a distinct set of features and wash modes. The drive belt is an integral component on every model. The belt connects to the motor pulley system to control the movement of the tub and agitator. If the belt is too loose or too tight, the washer may not be able to function properly. Adjust the belt to keep the Maytag washing machine running efficiently.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.

    • 2

Remove the screws at the base of the front panel. Lift the bottom of the front panel away from the Maytag washer to disconnect it from the spring clips at the top of the panel.

    • 3

Set the front panel aside to expose the motor, pulleys and belt.

    • 4

Tilt the washing machine back so the top is resting on the wall and the bottom of the machine can be accessed.

    • 5

Loosen the motor mounting bolts with the socket wrench.

    • 6

Move the motor forward or backward to adjust the belt tension as needed.

    • 7

Tighten the motor mounting bolts when the belt is properly adjusted.

    • 8

Set the washer onto its feet. Replace the front panel. Install the two screws that hold the panel in place.
