Troubleshooting for a GE Self-cleaning Radiant Range JBP75

The GE model JBP75 range features four electric burners, an oven and a broiler. Although this model is fairly straightforward to use, problems can develop. Finding the cause of a specific problem requires following a process of elimination. You may find that the problem is caused by user error rather than by a mechanical problem. In other cases, you may find that the problem is with the home’s electrical supply rather than with the range itself.

Instructions

  1. Oven Does Not Turn On

    • 1

Push the oven’s electrical supply cord firmly into the wall outlet to ensure that the cord is secure.

    • 2

Determine whether the electrical outlet the oven is plugged into is working. Unplug the oven and plug a device known to work into the outlet. Contact an electrician if the device does not work.

    • 3

Flip a tripped circuit breaker to the “On” setting. The circuit breakers are located within the home’s breaker box.

    • 4

Unlock the door if the latch was left in the locked position after a self-cleaning cycle. The oven will operate only in the self-cleaning mode when the door is locked.

    Unsatisfactory Baking or Roasting Results

    • 5

Position the cooking shelves at the appropriate height for the food item. Working from the highest shelf to the lowest, assume that the shelves are number 1 through 4. Place the cooking shelf at level 4, meaning the position at the bottom of the oven, if baking angel food cake or frozen pies. Position the shelf at either level 4 or level 3 if cooking bundt or poundcake. Position the shelf at level 3 or level 2 if preparing biscuits, muffins, brownies, layer cakes, pies, cookies, cupcakes or casseroles.

    • 6

Use only heavy weight aluminum, stainless steel, or porcelain enamel covered cast iron in the oven. Glass-ceramic and stoneware may be used, but are not recommended.

    • 7

Ensure that the oven’s thermometer is adjusted properly. Position an over thermometer onto one of the cooking shelves, then turn the oven on. Note the thermometer reading and compare that reading to the selected temperature of the oven. Adjust the oven’s thermometer if necessary. Rotate the oven temperature knob to the “Off” position. Press and hold down the “Hour +/--” pads until the digital display changes. Press either the “+” or “—” buttons to adjust the oven’s thermostat. The digital display will return to normal a few seconds after last pressing a button.

    Unsatisfactory Broiling Results

    • 8

Ensure that the control knob is turned all of the way to the “Broil” setting.

    • 9

Use only the broiler pan supplied with the oven.

    • 10

Preheat the broiler for at least 10 minutes before inserting the food item into the broiler.

    • 11

Open the oven’s door to its first detent position during the entire broiling period to leave a slight gap between the door and the oven.

    Self-Cleaning Setting Fails to Start

    • 12

Allow the range to cool to room temperature before attempting to start the self-cleaning mode.

    • 13

Turn the temperature control knob to the “Auto Self Clean” setting and wait for the “Auto Self Clean” light to illuminate.

    • 14

Lock the oven door by moving to door latch to the extreme right.
