How to Clean a Flame Sensor

Installed as a safety feature in gas appliances with digital circuitry, flame sensors are designed to detect the presence of a pilot light. Over time, oxidation or carbon buildup on the sensor rod can interfere with the sensor’s ability to detect a heat, causing the circuit to shut off the gas supply. If an appliance fails to ignite, or is working intermittently, removing and cleaning the flame sensor often solves the problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the appliance’s gas supply valve.

    • 2

Locate the flame sensor, adjacent to the pilot light. Remove the cover of the appliance with a screwdriver, if necessary, to access the sensor. Remove the mounting bracket at the base of the sensor with a wrench or screwdriver, depending on the design.

    • 3

Clean the sensor rod by gently rubbing the rod with a piece of fine-grade steel wool until all buildup is removed from the rod surface and the bare metal is visible.

    • 4

Reinstall the sensor. Turn on the gas supply and light the pilot. If the pilot will not stay lit, the sensor is faulty and requires replacement.
