Removing the Screen on a GE Dishwasher

If your GE dishwasher doesn't seem to be filling up with enough water to properly do your dishes, one of the things you should check is the inlet screen. The purpose of the inlet screen is to help filter out grit and other materials in the water supply so they don't make it into the dishwasher. Over time, these screens can become clogged, impeding water flow into your GE dishwasher. With a few simple tools, you can remove the screen on a GE dishwasher for cleaning.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power for the GE dishwasher at the main circuit breaker for your residence. In newer homes, the dishwasher will be installed on its own circuit. Identify the circuit where the dishwasher is connected and move it to the "off" setting. Check that the dishwasher has correctly been turned off by trying to start the appliance. If it still starts, select a different switch at the circuit breaker.

    • 2

Turn off the water supply for the GE dishwasher. In most cases, this will be at the nearest sink. Rotate the knob connected to the washing-machine supply line by turning it all the way to the right.

    • 3

Remove the kick panel and lower kick panel from the GE dishwasher. These are the panels located underneath the dishwasher door that allow access to the plumbing and electronics for the appliance. Not all models will have two panels; some will just have one. Loosen the screws on the sides of the kick panels of the dishwasher and pull out of place.

    • 4

Place a towel on the floor underneath the dishwasher. Look for the copper supply pipe leading up to the dishwasher inlet valve. Using a wrench, loosen the coupling connecting the copper line to the inlet valve and gently pull the line out of the way.

    • 5

Remove the wiring panel on the inlet valve. This may be held in place with a screw, or it may just be wedged into place. Make notes of which wires are connected to which terminals for when it comes time to reassemble the valve. Gently pull the wires off the terminals with a pair of needle-nose pliers.

    • 6

Remove the screws holding the inlet valve assembly to the underside of the washing-machine cabinet.

    • 7

Loosen the screws holding the two halves of the inlet valve together. Remove the screen with a pair of needle-nose pliers.
